Subjects

A couple of thousand years ago life seemed a lot more simple than it is now and all that we needed to know about was how to grow food and stop the neighbours from stealing it from us and killing us into the bargain. Was it really is so simple though? An enterprising writer could have made a fortune in those days showing the readership 10 different ways to snare a rabbit; how to double the yield of peas and beans by using nothing more complex than horse manure; how to plough a field without getting backache; a treatise on self defence; and the best way to woo and win a fair maiden despite never had having had a bath for 20 years. People have always needed knowledge and always will! We now live in a complex society in which we need advice on such varied subjects as how to trim the hair on a pedigree poodle right through to how to design and build a zero-carbon city. One sure way to attract an audience is to be topical; at the moment we are going through an economic recession and many people are losing their jobs whilst millions of others are having to cut back dramatically on their spending. So, what sort of books will they want to buy? How about business opportunities? Write a book about 20 different ways of starting a business with little or no capital. What about teaching people how to survive on a reduced income? Millions of people go to supermarkets every day and buy preprocessed food which cost several times as much as the basic ingredients could be bought for so why not write a book about how to prepare tasty and nourishing meals out of cheap cuts of meat and vegetables? The pound is on the floor right now compared to many other currencies so holidaymaking abroad has become far more expensive; why not write a guide to cut-price holidays in the UK? When we were children half a century ago every family owned a tent so we used to be able to enjoy really cheap holidays under canvas and it not only kept us fit but also taught us to love the countryside around us as well. We have thousands of miles of beautiful shoreline and countryside in Britain, and it is fascinating to see how many people are more familiar with the attractions of Spain, Italy, France etc than they are about the wonders on their own doorstep!

We live in an information society and people have a seemingly insatiable appetite for it. Find a subject which fulfils a need, research the subject thoroughly and write a book about it, and you have a very good chance of making money, possibly a very great deal of money indeed. I stated earlier however that many many people decide to write books, but few actually get down to actually doing it. Make sure that you are one of those few, and don't put it off any longer.
